Pregnancy

When you find out you`re pregnant, first register for your mother and child health handbook (bosehikenkotecho, 母子健康手帳), for medical checkup coupons, and to hear about classes and exam schedules.

Mizusawa Health Center

Open weekdays M-F 8:30-17:15 except national holidays.

Esashi General Branch Office, Health and Welfare Division

Every Thursday, except national holidays, from 9:00 to 11:30. Please contact if you need to register on another time/day.

Every Tuesday, except national holidays, from 8:30 to 11:30. Please contact if you need to register on another time/day.

Isawa Health and Welfare Division (Health Promotion Plaza Yuyukan)

Every Tuesday except national holidays from 9:00 to 11:30. Please contact if you need to register on another time/day.

Koromogawa Health and Welfare Division (Health and Welfare Center)

(Please make a reservation in advance.) Opens weekdays M-F, except national holidays from 8:30 to 17:15.

What to bring: your applications (you will receive this from the hospital or doctor you visit after the exam.)

Pregnancy Medical Expenses

Oshu city helps pay for part of your medical expenses during and after pregnancy, but you cannot receive this money after birth, or receive money for expenses before you applied. You should apply right after you receive your mother and child health handbook.

This is called妊産婦医療費助成, ninsanpu iryohi josei in Japanese.

Where to register:

  • Oshu City Hall・Mizusawa General Branch Office, Health Promotion Division
  • Esashi General Branch Office, Health Promotion Division
  • Maesawa, Isawa, Koromogawa General Branch Office Citizen Services Division

What to bring:

Health insurance card, personal seal (inkan), bankbook, mother and child health handbook.

After Childbirth

Please submit a notification of birth (shusshotodoke, 出生届) to the Citizen Services division of city hall or a branch office within 14 days of birth, with the day your child was born counting as the first day.

Then, register to get your child`s medical checkup coupons(nyuyoji ippan kenko shinsa jushinhyo乳幼児一般健康診査受診票), a vaccination booklet , and hear about vaccinations and childrearing.

Where to register:

Mizusawa Health Center, Esashi General Branch Office Health and Welfare Division, Maesawa General Branch Office Health and Welfare Division, Isawa Health Promotion Plaza Yuyukan, Koromogawa Health and Welfare Center.

All of these facilities are open weekdays M-F from 8:30 to 17:15 except national holidays. Please try to register at the ward you live in, because you`ll be told about classes in the area.

What to bring: mother and child health handbook.

What to fill out: Application for child`s medical checkup coupons(yobosesshu yoshinhyo shinseisho予防接種予診票申請書), which you`ll receive at the counter.

There are other places you should register, including:

  • Entering your baby into your health insurance
  •  Registering to receive a monthly child allowance (jidoteate, 児童手当)
  • To receive a one-time payment to help cover birth costs (shusan ikuji ichijikin出産育児一時金)
  • To register for the city to pay for your child`s medical costs until preschool age (nuyoji iryohi josei, 乳幼児医療費助成)
