Where is Oshu?

Oshu city is in Iwate, the northern part of Honshu. Looking at the picture, you can see the ILC (pictured at 50 km) goes into part of Oshu. Nearby is Mizusawa-Esashi station, our bullet train station.

Oshu City formed in 2006 as a merger between Esashi and Mizusawa cities, Isawa and Maesawa towns, and Koromogawa village. It stretches for about 993 square kilometers with the Kitakami River running through its center. The average high for the hottest month of August is 28.9 Celsius, and the average low for the coldest month in January is -5.6 Celsius.

Living in Oshu

Life is good in Oshu. Enjoy tranquil rice fields, mountains and forests while enjoying the convenience of stores and a bullet train station. Eat your fill of fresh local rice, fruits and vegetables, beef, eggs, and more.

We are fun. Oshu has three ski areas, eight hot springs, and one of the tallest climbing walls in Tohoku. The night view from campgrounds like Seiza no Mori and Tsubunuma Camp Grounds is unparalleled.

We are already a science city! Our connection to science spans centuries, a notable example being the Mizusawa Latitude Observatory founded in 1899. Now Oshu is home to NAOJ's Mizusawa VLBI Observatory.

We are supportive. The city and local international relations association provide<外部リンク> living information and support, and our monthly multilingual newsletter shows our commitment to keeping our residents informed.

Main Events and Products

In winter, enjoy the Kokuseki-ji Sominsai, a "festival of (almost) naked men and fire." Greet spring with the gorgeous Hibuse Matsuri which boasts a history of over 300 years, and the Esashi-jinku Festival with its costumed 100 deer dance. In the summer beef lovers can gather with friends for a barbeque while listening to the “mooing contest" at the Maesawa Beef Festival.

Oshu is famous for its delectable beef, apples, and rice. Add charm to your home with our Nambu ironware and Iwayado Tansu chests of drawers.

See the Oshu Sightseeing and Products Association website<外部リンク> for more info on Oshu events and products.
