Pregnancy

When you find out you`re pregnant, first register for your mother and child health handbook (bosehikenkotecho 母子健康手帳), for medical checkup coupons, and to hear about classes and exam schedules.

What to bring

Your application form (you will receive this from the hospital or doctor you visit after the exam.), personal seal (inkan), Number card, or My Number notification card plus ID like your passport, driver’s license, or residence card.

Pregnancy Medical Expenses

Oshu city helps pay for part of your medical expenses during and after pregnancy, but you cannot receive this money after birth, or receive money for expenses before you applied. You should apply right after you receive your mother and child health handbook.

This is called 妊産婦医療費助成 ninsanpu iryohi josei in Japanese.

What to bring

Health insurance card, bankbook, personal seal (inkan), mother and child health handbook.

After Childbirth

Please submit a notification of birth (shusshotodoke 出生届) to the Citizen Services division of city hall or a branch office within 14 days of birth, with the day your child was born counting as the first day.

Then, register to get your child`s medical checkup coupons (nyuyoji ippan kenko shinsa jushinhyo 乳幼児一般健康診査受診票), a vaccination booklet , and hear about vaccinations and childrearing.

Where to register

Division in charge of mother and child health care at your local branch of city hall. (Please try to register at the city hall branch closest to where you live, because you can hear about nearby parenting classes)

What to bring

Mother and child health handbook.

What to fill out

Application for child`s medical checkup coupons(yobosesshu yoshinhyo shinseisho 予防接種予診票申請書), which you`ll receive at the counter.

Other registry

There are other places you should register, including:

  • Entering your baby into your health insurance
  • Registering to receive a monthly child allowance (jidoteate 児童手当)
  • To receive a one-time payment to help cover birth costs (shusan ikuji ichijikin 出産育児一時金)
  • To register for the city to pay for your child`s medical costs until preschool age (nuyoji iryohi josei 乳幼児医療費助
